Just My Type Summer School 2015

Programme Brief

Just My Type is an exploration of typography in it’s broadest sense. From understanding and deconstructing letterforms, to producing typefaces and setting type to sculptural lettering and silkscreened collage – participants will explore typography as a tool for expression, communication, and creative experimentation.

Letters are graphic building blocks for communicating ideas, be it print based, digitally or otherwise. But letters and their characterful faces are mere shapes which can be inverted, subverted and converted into artworks in their own right. Letterforms and the negative spaces between them provide unexpected playgrounds to find new readings of type and the graphic language we have come to recognise.

Just My Type aims to question and reveal the endless possibilities of working with lettering, and impactful and imposing personality that is type.

During the programme participants will question:

  • What is the role of typography?
  • What makes a successful and interesting typographic composition?
  • How can traditional letterforms be experimented with?
  • What is the relationship between typography and art?
